Nazi occupation Guernsey WWII Empty
PostSubject: Nazi occupation Guernsey WWII   Nazi occupation Guernsey WWII EmptyMon 24 Jun 2019, 23:44

I have not yet read the book, but it seems promising.
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Day-Nazis-Came-Astonishing-Childhood-ebook/dp/B01LXCFEFR
I give the text from Amazon because it is too complicated to "compose" a coherent narration. It takes certainly more than an hour for me to edit an English summary...
"By the time he was six years old, Stephen had been bombarded by the Luftwaffe and deported from occupied Guernsey, along with his family, to a prison camp in the heart of Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. He had seen men die in front of him and walked with Jewish prisoners straight off the cattle-trucks from Bergen- Belsen. He had nearly drowned, narrowly avoided being savaged by Alsatian guard dogs, been beaten by a pathological member of the SS and had his hand broken by a guard whilst attempting to feed a Russian prisoner.
The family kept going through three and a half years of imprisonment, reinforced by their strong sense of survival and their loving support for each other, before a dramatic and violent liberation by Allied forces ended their ordeal. Yet when they were eventually returned to Guernsey, it was to find that their tranquil home had been stricken and scarred by Nazi occupation.
Told through Steven Matthews’ own memories, as well as writing from his mother’s diaries and previously unpublished photographs, The Day the Nazis Came is an utterly unique memoir. Depicting the world of Nazi prison camps through the eyes of a child – a world in which the real dangers often seemed trivial and every day was a new adventure – it tells not just of the prisoners’ plight, but provides an important and poignant reminder that not every German soldier was cruel and hateful. Above all, it pays tribute to the preciousness of childhood, and shows that human kindness may flower in the unlikeliest of places."

And about the author (also from Amazon)...what a life...
Stephen Rabey Matthews.
Stephen was born in Guernsey, Channel Islands in 1938 and following the barbaric German invasion of the Channel Islands, in 1940, he was illegally deported to Germany by late 1942, with his father and mother. After the being liberated by Free French forces in 1945, the family returned to Guernsey where Stephen was educated and then later completed his business training in London.

Having had such a dramatic childhood, Stephen has gone on to do some extraordinary things since. In 1960, He joined the elite British Colonial Police Force in Northern Rhodesia (now Zambia,) and received many awards and commendations for his work, dedication and commitment in the aftermath of the Belgian Congo débâcle. This time in his life included the investigation of such things as witchcraft murders, making contact with the 'Wild Geese' mercenaries n the Congo,, the tracking down of British army deserter and spy, and also taking part in the search for the crashed plane of UN Secretary General Dag Hammarskjöld, still the subject of controversy today.

Since his Colonial days, he was appointed a Director and General Manager for Shell Marketing in the Channel Islands and later as a Director for a major Insurance and Financial Services Company in both Guernsey and Jersey. He has run his own international management consultancy company.

Having discovered his mother's war diaries and personal papers hidden away in an old family bible, he wrote the book ' The Day The Nazis Came,' documenting the family's traumatic experiences in various German concentration camps. These these days, he divides his time between Brittany in France and Southern China, whilst working on this and other writing projects."

Northern Rhodesia, Dirk, do you have heard for him by any chance?
In the time at the factory, I met a guy, who had been in Germany as prisoner of war. He had been first been in a real concentration camp. And there he told the life was bleak. To have enough food to survive was a daily struggle. Perhaps because he was serving at the kitchen? I don't know how he otherwise could have had the opportunity...only one potato on the floor...and he had to move it between his feet and the others made a wall around him...and he had to deal the potato with them...each one a piece raw potato...chewing it between the teeth, without showing to the guards or perhaps holding it till the relative security of the barrack...and these inmates were prisoners from a German "brother volk", you can guess what happened with the others, especially the Russians with whom they were sometimes together, he told. Later they were caserned? billetted?, on a farm and the farmers were quite otherwise and they had nearly a normal life for the rest of the war.

Kind regards from Paul.

Paul,

the name Stephen Matthews does ring a bell but remember that we are now talking some 60 years ago.

The Southern Rhodesia Police force was  British South African Police ( BSAP ) also nick named Brass Spit and Polish

The Northern Police Force was the NRP.

During that particular period all the white police officers had the rank of Inspector or higher. In other words as soon as a white recruit ( British  or white Rhodesian, white South African ) had passed out he would be given the rank of Inspector .

All constables up to the rank of sergeant were black Rhodesians.
No Asians or coloureds were recruited at that time.

Of course all recruiting , ranking changed when North Rhodesia became Zambia and Southern Rhodesia became Zimbabwe and the majority of the European (white ) population left for other countries.

I am not THAT certain but think that Matthews was stationed in either Ndola or Lusaka.

I was around that area from about 1954 up to about the early 1960's .

You mention witchcraft murders , the Congo problems and the "the Wild Geese" I presume that with the Wild Geese ( just a film title) you refer to Mad Mike's mercenaries who helped Tsombi holding on tho power.

Actually those witch craft murders was mor ethe work of that fanatical black female ( I think)named  Alice.

Interesting times but by now long forgotten by the world.

Paul,
the female's name just flashed before me:

Alice Lenshima of the Lumpa church

Dirk

Dirk,

you at home in many continents, starting in the North of Holland and moving to Rhodesia and then I suppose to that island before the continental European coast separated from it some thousands of years ago and still seemingly as mentioned in a thread overhere a temporary island on the Doggersbank with a disappeared culture, but now seemingly found some artifacts.

Dirk will first read the links you mentioned, but about the mercenaries and the murder on Lumumba to keep Tshombé in Katanga i know a lot, as about seemingly our Baldwin as "initiator" (opdrachtgever) of the murder...the same Baldwin that the Catholic Church want to beatify...
But will come back to you after have been done my research on the internet and will not try to come up with conspiracy theories;
And we have still in Belgium the unsolved murder on Dag Hammerskold too...

Kind regrds from Paul.

Gosh Paul , when you mention the "murder " of Dag Hammerskold and mad Mike's mercenaries and of course the two Rhodesia's it all brings back memories.

Paul , something you possible don't know and may be of interest to you is the fact that a country man of yours made quite some wild suggestions , especially when he had been having a few drinks.

Does the name Jan van Risseghem ring a bell with you ?
I think, although I may be wrong,  he was born in Belgium , then moved to Germany and went to Britain where he apparently joined the Royal Air Force. Maybe if you do some digging or googling you may find some more information.
This countryman of yours, Jan van Risseghem,  actually claimed that he shot down the plane in which Hammerskold was travelling.

Yes , it was said ,BUT NEVER CONFIRMED , that there were two planes in the air at the time the plane carrying Hammerskold crashed.
Remember also  as I mentioned before all this happened some 60 or more years ago.

Also around that time was a Roger Braco ( I am not that certain but think he was a Frenchman ).
He always maintained that this Jan van Risseghem was just talking a lot of nonsense.
Actually as far as we were concerned they were both loose canons or had been in the sun to long (tongue in cheek).

 Paul,
during that period there were quite a few interesting characters around that area and I am NOT only talking about the mercenaries who also came from different parts of the world to join mad Mike's mob but I am thinking of foreign countries intelligence agents.

But what an interesting time.

Dirk it is all in the actuality overhere. Sorry for the other readers it is all in Dutch..I will seek if I can find some articles in English, while the widow of Jan van Risseghem is English and in an interview she says that it couldn't have been her man who shot with the Fouga Magister, but she has not direct proof and it could also have been a German Dornier, which was there too and more accommodated for the work of shooting the DC 6.
https://www.hln.be/de-krant/-belgische-piloot-bekende-moord-op-vn-secretaris~a2d3ab80/
https://www.demorgen.be/nieuws/weduwe-piloot-spreekt-voor-het-eerst-over-crash-vn-baas-in-1961-mijn-jan-heeft-het-niet-gedaan~b6f083d0/?referer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.
And Dirk, if you read the article of "De Morgen" you can also say that it could have been the German Heinrich Schäfer with the Dornier. he was after all a Luftwaffe fighter pilot of WWII...
And it was all in the "climate" of  Gladio in Belgium, as we described in your former thread I mentioned overhere... the predecessor of the CIA could also have been interested in the Katanga case in the frame of the Cold War? Lumumba had asked the Russians in Congo. At least the interests of the Belgian mercenaries and the Americans were the same.

Kind regards from Paul.

Dirk,

further to King Baudouin and Lumumba.

And BTW, you refer to mad Mike I don't know who that is. I only know one Mad Mike and it was companion during years on the ex BBC forum.
https://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/belgium/1362659/Inquiry-blames-King-Baudouin-of-Belgium-over-Lumumba-killing.html
The Paul Belien mentioned in the article I met already several times, is in my opinion biased against Belgium as I via his
https://www.brusselsjournal.com/ learned and ultra Flemish nationalist adhering to the recent winning in the polls Vlaams Belang.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Beli%C3%ABn
But better in Dutch:
https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Belien
More serious content in the Brussels Times
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Brussels_Times
https://www.brusselstimes.com/all-news/magazine/50661/facing-the-truths-of-belgium-s-colonial-past-the-unresolved-case-of-patrice-lumumba-s-death/
From the article:
"On 17 January 1961, Lumumba was brought to Katanga by the ANC, urged to do so by Belgian Minister of African Affairs Harold d’Aspremont Lynden, allegedly because it was feared that he could be freed by his supporters. A few weeks earlier, the Belgian Parliament had held a discussion where members had warned that bringing Lumumba to Katanga into the hands of his enemies there would spell his death sentence."
"King Baudouin was aware of a letter from Major Guy Weber, military adviser to Tshombe, noting “that the life of Lumumba was in danger.” However, “no evidence has been found that either the government or the competent ministers were informed of this letter.”

So far, what is known, but some say that as Baudouin was aware of the coming murder, silently appreciated or positively responded...it is always the question, who had interest at the murder...

Kind regards from Paul.

Dirk, now I see what you mentioned with Mad Mike. And I still don't know where I mentioned the witchcraft...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mad_Mike_Hoare

I studied the whole evening the events around 1960 in the Belgian Congo, Northern Rhodesia and the Portuguese Angola. And also now read about the bulk of British mercenaries (more than the Belgians) and the South Africans in Katanga (between Angola, the Congo and Northern Rhodesia).

As it is here out of context I will start a new thread tomorrow.

Kind regards from Paul.
