| To get everyone in the mood; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hjwI9Oz0yl0Gil Perez was an ordinary man, a soldier with the Philippine Guard, until the day in October 1593,he went on guard duty in Manila and suddenly found himself on guard in Mexico City. Wearing a different uniform to everyone else, he was arrested as a suspected deserter and thrown in prison. There he remained for two months until the Manila galleon arrived in Mexico, with news that the Governor had been killed by Chinese pirates, information Perez had already provided. Furthermore, one of the passengers swore he had seen Perez in Manila on October 23rd. Perez was released and disappears from history, though he may well have returned to the Philippines, this time by more conventional methods. It is one of the all time classic anomoly stories, though the provenance suffers as the first recorded mention was not until a century later. However,Perez may not be alone, for in his book Miscellanies 1696, John Aubrey mentions an acquaintance who witnessed the burning at the stake, in Lisbon in 1655,of an individual who had been transported to Goa from eastern India in a similar manner. If this is a natural phenomenon, how often does it happen? Perez and the Portugee landed in places where their stories were recorded, more likely the victims would find themselves in the middle of the ocean or in a desert and vanish completely. It could happen to anyone.....at anytime. [cue Twilight Zone music] |
