| Most recent mobile operating systems have problems with translating this forum into a mobile friendly version - resulting in constantly having to scroll left and right (and up and down and diagonally) just to read each line of a message when the pages are displayed in "desktop mode" on small screens.
I have therefore registered the site with the free mobile app "Topic'it" and tested that everything works.
If you're not already using the app it can be downloaded for free from App Store and Play Store. Once installed you will need to register as a Topic'it user - this should then send you to a directory of available categories which includes all forums such as ours known to the app. You will find Res Historica under "Education" or simply search for it by name.
Once found you can then log in to Res Historica and do just about anything you can do on a PC or tablet, but with an easy to read and easy to navigate interface. It is possible to automate your sign-in so that accessing the app will afterwards log you in directly. Plus you can set up alerts and feeds etc if you want the app to notify you on your phone when new content has come in (for specific threads or all threads - if you're feeling really masochistic).
Anyway - someone give it a lash and see how they get on. If it's deemed a good move I can further integrate the Topic'it app features into the main site so that it will become even more manageable. |

| I have at last got a Smartphone. Its workings are a complete mystery to me, but I intend master this thing if it kills me.
The very helpful chap in the shop set up the Topic'It app thingy for me, and I am pleased to report it works well. The Res His topics are all nice and easy to view.

| I do not possess a Smart phone - nor even a slightly shabby, ill-dressed one - and indeed I do not have any non-fixed-line, personal telephonic apparatus at all (there's negligible mobile phone coverage here but I can get internet via my own, very expensive but still very slow, satellite connection). Can I ask: how do photos/images appear when viewed via this app? ... I guess it re-sizes appropriately to fit the viewing screen, but what about two, or more, images side-by-side ... with maybe a caption relating to them both? Are there any particular things to be aware of? ... Just so I know how it displays things like that, and so I know how best to present stuff. Ta. |

| It will size each picture to fit the available frame and therefore displays them one beneath the other, if they are two separately posted images and not one image you had made from two pictures and saved as a single jpeg. Arranging them so they appear to be side by side on your fully opened desktop browser will not be preserved in smaller browser displays, or even by your desktop browser if you minimise it slightly. |

| I hate to admit this, but I have spent the last week learning how to use my new Smartyphone - addiction develops very quickly. I can see now why the Boss was considering moving us to somewhere easily accessible on these things. I have not, I hasten to add, joined Facebook, but I can see that the future lies that way. Once you have one of these phones you tend to use it all the time - the old laptop gets neglected, and long, detailed messages, however interesting and erudite, seem strangely dated. I deplore this trend and am all for our old-fashioned style messages, especially the ones here at Res His. I hate texting because I can't do it - it is a pitifully slow and laborious process for me, as I keep getting the letters wrong. It's like being a child again, using simple, short words and sentences - dreadful, trite stuff because it's easy to produce. Worrying. The predictive text is very useful - I wonder if Wobbleweapon would have used it? I can just imagine "Hamlet - the Predicted Text Version". I did try to convey a deep (even cogent) thought to a friend yesterday via text, but put "pissibilities" instead of "possibilities" which ruined my attempt at profundity rather. Was he right? Discuss. |

| Of course someone has done it - probably years ago... I should have known... so embarrassing to have been living in a previous century for so long (I am indeed like the female in Trike's picture). |

| Temperance,
my wife is pushing me for a smartphone (I suppose as I am up to now not sure of what a smartphone is...my wife calls me an "antique"), but I just received an Apple tablet as present and still learn Apple while I am on Windows 7. In theory I guess I could use my Apple tablet as smartphone?
But yes the Smarthphone seems to be easy to use GPS...although one can use also one's GPS in the hand to seek one's way through the streets? And even adding to the tablet an app to have Phone call?
Temperance, happy to see you once back overhere and a bit sad that I just now am so heavy involved in my thread on Historum: "No Renaissance without Islam?" But I guess in some days I will have again more time for this board...
Kind regards from your dedicated Paul. |

| Addendum to my previous message:
And Temperance what are you meaning in God's name with the second message???? Meles meles if you too, as I see you as the knowledgeable one of us two, can give a "glimpse" of what our dear Temperance can mean with all this enigmatic stuff?
Kind regards to both from Paul. |

| Paul, it's an attempt to re-write Shakespeare's plays in a language and form that would be understandable/familiar to today's youth ... I'm not sure how familiar you are with the work of Shakespeare, but think of say, Molière - who you might know better - and trying to reduce one of his plays to a single sheet of A4, with no sentence longer than 12 words and written in modern trendy 'yoof' speak. |

Actually I'd like to have a go at the To Be etc. speech using predictive text, but have Hamlet going for the wrong word all the time. However, the days when we would spend time doing such daft things here simply for fun of it are over - which is a real shame. |

| Well I can't find the thread about technical issues so this is the closest I can find. After some offsite suggestions from nordmann I've managed to access the site for the first time in a few days by changing the DNS setting. Thanks for your advice, nordmann. |

Is Topic'it now de rigueur for accessing Res Historica on a mobile? I haven't downloaded the app as yet but if I try to access Res Hist on my phone the site keeps reloading every 5 seconds effectively making navigation impossible. |
