As a mark of respect to our friend, Paul, whose funeral takes place this afternoon, this board will maintain a short silence. To Paul's friends and family, several of whom have dropped in here over the last few days, I extend my deepest sympathy for your loss. Please accept this small gesture as a mark of solidarity among his many friends here with you in your grief right now.

The board will be reactivated from later this evening.

Nordmann,

a great gesture and Paul would be honoured if he had known. Thanks for closing board and short silence in respect for him.

It is going to be difficult to keep this board alive without his input.

Without wanting to sound too much like an echo chamber I agree with Dirk - nordmann did well to close the board temporarily to honour Paul.  I hope Paul's 'real life' partner, family and friends are helped a little at this difficult time to know that those of us who only knew him 'online' are bearing him - and them - in our thoughts.

Yes, but that said, I sincerely hope your final sentence proves to be wrong, Dirk - and I suspect Paul would, too. I think we are all, during this sad week, ruefully realising the truth of the old cliché: "You don't know what you've got until it's gone". Keeping things going in Paul's memory would be good, but it may just not work. Sometimes we have to let things go...

The temporary closure was an appropriate and sensitive gesture.
