Hi Hereword (and great to see you're Awake!)

Thanks - I'm trying to be very diplomatic and not steal Johnny Hus's thunder so the opening has been "low key" (to put it mildly). It's being trawled for Google sitemapping at the moment so should start popping up in search engines soon. I had hoped to begin it with the beebers, but as I said, best let them settle where they are for now!

Hopefully though we can set a prevalent tone before the hordes descend Rolling Eyes :) so any contributions to the discussions would be more than welcome!

Cheers!

Greetings Haesten!

You must excuse the fact that the decorators are still in - as Edward the Confessor might have said in December 1065 to tourists visiting his new abbey at Westminster. Let's hope we have a little longer time than him to use the gaff!

Typical badger! Pests - all of them! Shoot em! Gas em! Out with the ferrets!

Sorry - lost the run of meself. Actually I think I can set in some code which forces all avatars to conform, even badgers. I'll look into it.

Welcome, by the way and thanks for the comp!

Thanks for the welcome, nordmann! I am awake- just- despite the liquid Christmas I've been enjoying! Laughing

I wouldn't worry about 'stealing' JH's thunder, we all have something valid to offer regarding history- I wouldn't also be surprised if he popped along at some point himself, as the others will? Cool

It would be great to see Johnny here, I'm trying to persuade Paul to come along over here while we're in a surprisingly enjoyable thread on historum which I'd like to see imported here sometime.
I assume that a lot of the others are still away on festive activities but will turn up as they filter back.

Would someone not like to start a quiz? It is Friday! Just don't ask me unless it has culinary connections, my brain is in domestic, but not goddess, mode.

"Honey, you've shrunk the avatars!".... thanks, that's saved me the job of re-sizing. And by making it standard it'll make the threads a lot easier to read as I noticed the big avatars (like mine) were forcing the posts to take up lots of (wasted) line spacings.

I have to say, nordmann, you're doing an absolutely splendid job... not only setting all this up and problem solving the site ... but still helping people out and trouble shooting their individual problems.

I would say that when next you are in the bar I'll stand you a drink - generous as always me - but I expect you'll have had you tea. Rolling Eyes

Hi ferval... how are you? Personally I'm still in hibernation from Christmas... I can't believe 2011 has just about come to an end already. Getting old I guess.

You asked for a quiz... I've just started one in the bar... something easy to get us off Very Happy

Knackered if that's not too vulgar an expression for these surroundings. I've just about got over the Xmas cookathon and now I'm in the middle of the Ne'erday one. I've got the grandwean overnight so the young people can party and that's not exactly relaxing, then they'll all descend tomorrow, probably hung over and definitely ravenous.
How were your pies in the end?

I had a look at your quiz, thanks for that, it can't be the obvious answer, anyway the stone I'm thinking about is currently nowhere near a cesspit! I have a cheek demanding a quiz since I've neither the energy, imagination nor the opportunity to properly participate right now.

My pies were good, thankyou,.. did you enjoy the lobster or was it the cat that eventually had that pleasure? As well as my small pies I did, rather rashly; attempt a huge mediaeval/tudor-style "Great Raised Pie" .. in the form of a casellated tower with maccicholations etc.... Perhaps least said the better... it started off OK, but then sort of slumped and turned into something like you'd find in Pisa. And then it toppled over completely... seige works and mines I guess.
But still tasted absolutely delicious!

I'm cooking witloof à la flamande tonight (.... ask Paul Rykier :) ). It's very Belgian, very Flemish, although I'm doing it to the mother-in-law's recipe, and she's Wallon.. so I guess it's not really, really Flemish. Wink

We'll get thrown out, you know, for broaching these subjects but never mind, the endive dish sounds delicious. I must try it, I'm fond of the heads caramelised in a little sugar and then braised in stock or wrapped in ham and baked in a cheese sauce.
Nothing so exotic here, it's New Year so steak pie is compulsory with plenty of mash to soak up the booze.

It's not exotic really, just as you say, belgian endive... witloof/chicon whatever you call it - caramelised in a little sugar and then braised in stock (no ham or cheese tonight). Of course all the French around me are doing les traditionelles ,sea-food extravaganzas of... well whatever... oysters, mussels, palourdes, cockles, crabs, shrimps, prawns, lobsters, langoustes, ... etc.

For me, tonight, c'est tout simple... it's just roast duckling (with roast tatties of course!) and witloof (gratin de chicon)...plus local red wine at 2€ the litre from the local corner shop. And then........... "I Claudius" (original BBC version on DVD) for afters. Bliss! Laughing

Lucky you. I am being compelled to repair to a local hostelry where there is to be no entertainment, just karaoke and a subsequent disco, with bacon baps and chips.

Much later edit
Pork bap not bacon baps ... and there weren't any chips.

PS: Finally could validate my account. Found now that it was Microsoft Smart Screen , which had hidden the E-mails from Res Historica as "unwanted". And now thinking about it: Yes "res" is feminine singular.

Yes, Paul, 5th Declension, Nominative singular. Less familiar (certainly for readers of detective stories) than its ablative plural.

Just realised I had lost the end of that posting - the ablative plural is "Rebus". Actually, if one considers Varro and Columella (inter alia) who each wrote monographs on agriculture under the title "De Re Rustica" I suppose Ciceronian Latin would demand the plural "RE" rather than "RES" for the board's name.

Afternoon all!
Excellent site Nordy, and one which is needed. I had no idea that the b***ards at the BBC had scuttled the forums (ok, ok, fora) until I popped in for a quick look round this morning. Nice to see so many refugees in here, I look forward to squabbling with you all!
Cheers

I'm probably being too demanding but, is there any way to show the latest posts on each thread rather than just the latest under each main heading? I know you can go to 'new posts' but I'm lazy.

Yes, I keep missing posts by going to the 'last post' shown on the home page when there have been others that have come in on other topics under the same subheading. Say there have been 3 posts in Eagle and Child on different threads, only the latest is shown with a direct link but there is nothing to alert you to posts on the other threads.
Just ignore this if it's too ridiculously complicated or will clutter the place up.

I've had a look and I can't see a way of doing it. Even a count of unread posts would probably do the business but that's not an option either. The problem is that the cookie which is used to work out posts which are "new" to you is basically just a time stamp and is read only when you click on "View posts since last visit". It's a simple algorithm that is used which displays any post with a time stamp later than your cookie regardless of whether you particpated in the topic or not.

I can break the display down on the main page so that sub-categories get their own box (and therefore a "Last post" display to themselves). But I can't break it down to topic (or thread) level without risking serious problems with formatting. However there might be a way of limiting topic displays in that kind of system to only those with new content so I'll look into it.

Remember also that a green quill on the left indicates new content which you have yet to see. If you view the displayed last post and find the quill is still green on the main page afterwards then at least you know there's new stuff in the category you've yet to see.

PostSubject: Re: Hi all, newbie here!   Hi all, newbie here! EmptyWed 04 Jan 2012, 20:09

The way I do it is to first load the image from my PC up to the server. You do this by clicking on the left of the two ringed image buttons pictured below:

Hi all, newbie here! 0001a10

That gives you this:

Hi all, newbie here! 0001b10

Then, after selecting browse and "host it" copy the URL (last option in box) and allow it to be written to your clipboard. After that you click on the right button of the two ringed in the picture above and get a field where you paste what you've just copied (see picture below). This then translates to code in the text input area:

Hi all, newbie here! 0001c10

Alternatively you can link directly to an image on the web simply by finding its URL and pasting it straight into the box in the last pic above. This option is kinder to me as it means we don't use up the available space for images allocated to the site (costs money to expand it and it's not that big).

It fits mine no problem. Maybe all those links Paul put in his message there has upset things. When you say it doesn't fit do you mean you have to scroll to the right to read it? Or has a portion simply "disappeared"?

EDIT - I've removed the links from his post. Any better?

Hi Islanddawn and welcome aboard! Thanks for the kind words about the design of the kip.

At the moment I notice that "less smilies" is winning in the poll - if you require more I'd advise you to go in and vote! I found several huffs, miffs and high horses - however none of them were knitted in quite the manner we are accustomed to. If you bump into Priscilla on the world wide web tell her to get cracking!

Nice to hear from Islanddawn as well! Your island hasn't been sold to the Germans I take it Therese?
As for me am back in wet, windy England once more. Lots of reasons, mainly that Mrs DL seems to have turned into a baby production line (DL Jr. 3 arrived in May). Had to start to think rationally, a nice warm island home seemed a bit of an unfair extravagance, especially when you take the precarious financial state of poor old Hellas into account. So, sold up and moved back. Missing the sun, sea and outstanding view, but not missing the uncertainty.

Hi Trike! Welcome aboard. Plant eaters can roam where they will but be careful, some meat eaters have already been spotted loitering around the pub area!

Dia dhíobh go léir, a chairde. (God be with you all, my friends.)

This is Mick_Mac (aka Harpo) here, now labouring under the name Ozymandias. I am on Historum, Englistory, Boards.ie (History & Heritage) and now Res Historica using this username.

Nordmann, you are to be congratulated. This site looks promising and stimulating.I look forward to posting here whenever I can although I return to work on Monday and may not have as much time as I would like to continue being very active. But rest assured I will be reading the website and keeping abreast of developments.

Happy New Year to you all,

My real name is Michael but everybody who knows me calls me Mick.

Nowhere special Bandick, only up to Pireaus to annoy the kids for a couple of weeks. Made a nice change from them coming down here and annoying us with their piles of washing and stuff.
