Ramses III and his neckerchief Empty
PostSubject: Ramses III and his neckerchief   Ramses III and his neckerchief EmptyMon 05 Aug 2019, 08:34

The mummy of Ramses III has a broad neck band, or neckerchief, which I think was considered unusual by archaeologists. His remains are in the Cairo Museum.

On TV last night, I saw that a CT scan of the mummy has revealed that he had his throat cut, and this was obviously the cause of his death.

It looks like the murder was arranged by his harem. Another mystery solved by technology millenia after the deed.

Hatsheput,

thanks for this ancient murder story. And it sparked an old memory about Agatha Christie and some murder plot in Egypt. And yesterday the first approach in internet gave me:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Murder_on_the_Nile
but when I saw the name Poirot I immediately knew that it wasn't that...but I don't never give up easely and as I had still that vague memory I did the search with the combination of the name ancient Egypt and bingo there it was...
I saw in English a two hour documentary about Agatha and it is unbelievable on how many places of the world she was...
https://www.agathachristie.com/about-christie/
And here the murder story novel in ancient Egypt
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death_Comes_as_the_End
And coming a TV adaptation
https://www.radiotimes.com/news/tv/2019-08-09/death-comes-as-the-end-air-date-trailer-cast-bbc/
And if you want to read the novel tomorrow

Hatsheput, and yes modern science can bring a lot of knowledge about archaeological samples. I read in a historybook about our region overhere that they could prove the long distance commerce by analyzing the clay of the pottery found here, as the origin of the clay as coming, if I recall it well, from the Carpatians...
Even yeast of the time of the Egyptians...

Kind regards from Paul.

And Hatsheput, why couldn't Agatha Christie
https://www.britannica.com/biography/Agatha-Christie
instead of murder in the Ancient Egypt, have written a novel in the future about murder in space? I agree it was already to the end of her life and the multicrews started only then, but at that period it was foreseeable that there would come a space station...
Already the first crime (not yet murder) in space Wink

Perhaps Lady Mallowan was aware that others - notably Isaac Asimov - had got there already.

Dear Gil,

I know that I with "you" always have to "op mijn tellen letten" (they translate by : watch my back)
These time it was an easy one (not the "according to the Dhondt method" from the last time)

Indeed Agatha Mary Clarissa Miller could have known about Isaac Asimov's novel

You are a fountain of knowledge, cher Gil. Where do you contain that all under those grey hairs?

Kind regards from Paul.

The story of the Harem Conspiracy, the plot to kill Ramses III, the assassination and subsequent trial and fall out would make a stunning (if somewhat gruesome) feature film or television mini-series. The Judicial Papyrus (which relates the story) resides in the Egyptian Museum in Turin which has recently made many of its papyri and other objects and documents accessible online:

Museo Egizio (Italian language)

Museo Egizio (English language)

(To view the Papyrus Collection specifically one needs to register although registration is free.)

For some reason the only comprehensive translation of the Judicial Papyrus which they offer is neither in Italian nor in English but in French. That said - if you fancy trying to decipher some of the hieroglyphs for yourself (and like me you haven’t a clue) then you might like to try doing so with the help of this user-friendly beginner’s guide to Egyptian hieroglyphs:

This lockdown isn’t lifting anytime soon so browsing thousands of years of ancient Egyptian history should go some way towards helping prevent the brain from mummifying.
