After watching Doctor Zhivago, Bill Mauldin's 1958 cartoon on Boris Pasternak. This image won Mauldin his second Pulitzer Prize:

Related to Bosquet's "C'est magnifique"

From Punch, 1936:

Which visually echoed another of Bernard Partridge's 'Punch' cartoons (from 30 May 1934):

The text reads,

Who's Afraid of the Big Bad Bear?
Madame La France. "It's a good bear - a nice bear - a kind bear! We must give it one of our Geneva buns!"
(Signs are noticed for a rapprochement between France and the U.S.S.R., and it is suggested that Russia will apply for admission to the League of Nations.)

... as well as that from 12 June 1905 (10 months after the signing of the Anglo-French Entente Cordiale):

Only William's Way.
Madame La France. "What a very uppish person!"
Mr John Bull. "Oh, I suppose it's what he calls being 'correct.'"
("In foreign policy the relations of the German empire with all the Powers are correct, and with most Powers they are good and friendly." The Kaiser's Speech at the Reichstag - The Times, Wednesday, November 29.)

And talking about cartoons echoing old tropes, here's Martin Rowson's take on the recent French Presidential elections (from The Guardian, 25 April 2022).

... after 'La Liberté guidant le peuple' by Eugène Delacroix commemorating the July Revolution of 1830.

Although in Macron's case many of the people are feeling sick and holding their noses because they have voted for him just to keep an even worse-smelling option out.
