Support for Hitler, was prevalent amongst large businesses, who supported him, because of their fear of Communism, he received financial support from wealthy industrialists. The Nazis also seemed to appeal to aristocratic elements, many youngsters from this class joined the SS. Support was strong amongst craftspeople and small shop owners, many who felt deprived by the emergence of department stores, which the Nazis pledged to curb. The Nazi regime attracted many white-collar workers, who benefitted from the improving economy, which improved their lifestyle, they also bought in to the image of Hitler as a unifying leader, bringing Germans together. The middle-class was proportionately over-represented in early Nazi support, as they left traditional parties in large numbers. Nazi ideology was very supportive of rural communities, and those communities, including farmers, were generally supportive of Hitler and the party. He was also able to appeal to workers through an improving economy, and new Nazi labour organisations, also by removing the language of class warfare, and replacing it with a concept of a shared racial society. The Nazi party had considerable success amongst the young, those eligible to vote for the first time. Over a period of time, exposure to Nazi propaganda and recruitment into Hitler Youth organisations, resulted in a significant indoctrination of German youth. Adolf Hitler appeared to offer the German people a new opportunity to regain national pride, so severely effected in their eyes by the harsh terms of the Versailles Treaty, after their defeat in WW1, and the immense recession in the early 1930's. It should remembered that when Hitler came to power in 1933, around 98% of the German population, conformed to the Nazi racial profile, for instance only one percent of Germans were Jews. Nazi philosophy would not have been a significant problem for the vast majority of Germans. |
