When media hype becomes accepted as fact and now, almost a century on, historical fact.

What other examples of mis-representations of historical and archaeological finds, that are now accepted as fact, do you know of?

And can it, in all honesty, be argued that any information (even false) is beneficial to the promotion and appreciation of history?
