Gil, didn't find "view the whole list" on the home page...
Even after an intensive search Wink

Yes, well you wouldn't find it there, Paul - it is actually on "recent activity". Sorry to mislead you.

That has always been nonsense - it shows primarily the "landing page" with which a unique IP address has accessed the site within the last five or so minutes (obtained through periodic spot-checking by Forumotion's automated server access administration tools). It does not show any navigation through the site by them, and cannot be relied upon as a valid count of people actually interacting with the site in real-time. It doesn't distinguish either between real people and bots. In other words it serves no practical purpose other than as a very general indicator of activity and there is absolutely no reason why anyone would want to view that list as it stands. I suppose if the site was a hugely popular entity being accessed by millions the patterns of access might have more meaning for administrators as an aid to designing the site and its options, but even then I cannot see why members would be invited to view them at all.

I haven't done this in a while so thought you may be interested. Google have devised a more accurate way of reporting actual people actually opening pages from this site due to Google searches. Here's the latest aggregated report running from most popular at the top, and I think you'll be surprised by the subjects which most consistently draw people in to read stuff here!

("Impressions" means when a page from the site showed up after someone did a Google search but they didn't then click to open it. "Page Title" is the Forumotion name for the page so forgive the formatting).

Interesting reminder of some of the topics that have been discussed here, many of which I had completely forgotten. Interesting also that some of the topics that have attracted the most google search interest (even allowing for recent ones that haven't been around for that long) are sometimes those that haven't been discussed at length, and visa versa. It also occurs to me that if posts are to attract searches then they need to use key words that searchers might employ: so rather than using clever word-play in the title, it really needs to be succinct and as near to what one might type when conducting a search for information if it is to be found. I'll bear that it mind as I'm sometimes guilty of that myself, eg 'dish of the day' would probably get more search hits if it was entitled 'food in history', or something like that.

And if ever a thread was worth a wider viewing it is yours, MM. - Historical Cookery, Food and Dishes of the Day might get attention - just a suggestion.

Yes, this is true. But Google also "crawls" pages - ie. goes through the entire content of a page and registers certain nouns, pronouns, verbs etc - and these will also be used to present results to a search-engine user. People may not have noticed but Forumotion made a "tag" method available a while back whereby one can basically highlight text within a post (yours or anyone else's as far as I remember) that you consider these bot crawlers (what a lovely image that doesn't conjure up) should especially take note of. Once "tagged" then these words/phrases/expressions can be used for all sorts of search functions from inside and outside the site.

I'll check it out further but I think when I experimented with the facility I wasn't too impressed with the way it highlighted the chosen content with hashtags etc. Or maybe I'm wrong. In any case we can give it a go (if I wasn't dreaming it and it really exists).

I got an electronic newsletter from Res Historica last night - I assume that's your doing Nordmann. Good idea, if it goes out to the email addresses of everyone who's registered as a member, it might prompt some long lost friends to reappear.

I sent nothing, MM. Can you send me a copy of the newsletter via the site e-mail thingy so I can see what it was and where it originated? It could be some gimmick that Forumotion have implemented or it could be something worse. Sounds worrying to be honest ...

Thanks MM, I got your mail.

Apparently this is a "feature" started by Forumotion on 31st January without notifying people in advance (it was mentioned on their own main discussion forum but not sent out as a notice to admins). I have found the setting involved on our own admin panels and turned it off as it is a blatant invitation for the site to be blacklisted by people's anti-spam programs. I'll have a look at it and see if it's worth having.

Ah yes, I hadn't thought of that ... and it's of no interest to me, nor I imagine other regulars, as we already know what's been recently posted.

The Quiz is now jamming. There's too much stuff for this old device to manage and it keeps saying historyboard.net is not responding. That's when I'm logged in. Otherwise the audio clues are all there apart from number 9.

There's another computer in the office I can use. I'll try it later on. Need to go and do some work now.

I've altered the code for 9 as well now, so that should be all of them.

The amount of embedded material on the page is pretty OTT, right enough, but it should eventually load even on a low speed internet connection without timing out. Some browsers however may attempt to retrieve a lot of content from cache purely for version comparison which - counter to the point of having cached info - actually leads to "hung" displays, connection timeouts, etc. When faced with a large amount of data to retrieve and compare it simply gives up. The solution there is to delete browser cache - something that really should be done regularly anyway as good housekeeping policy but which people tend not to get round to doing, or are even aware that all this junk built up over time within the browser's memory is seriously slowing them down. You could maybe try that?

I was just about to do that, cough

Seriously, I found out how to do it on the web and have carried it out.

Wikihow tells it, mine's is Internet Explorer.

nordmann, what have you done to your background.

Instead of your imaginative background of before it is now a misery, I don't know what colour...black slightly brown even school blackboard not inviting colour...

Kind regards from Paul.

I haven't got a problem with Res Hist site but when I click on the 'update' onscreen button on Bullguard (clicking using the trackpad as the plug in mouse broke because the cable was so short) said onscreen button goes black for a moment and then goes back to red (i.e. doesn't work).  I've shot a query off to Bullguard but I just wondered if any of you techno buffs have a bit more clue that a low tech bod like myself.

I know little about Bullguard except that they run woeful update servers - their Internet Security pattern files are issued by BitDefender, a separate company, and when you update you're actually connecting to both companies for different files. If one of them is out of action then nothing happens and you just have to wait. They're also a little coy about admitting server failures at their end, but see what they say themselves if you've opened a service ticket with them.

Oh thanks for the info anyway.  I wondered if the problem was with my laptop but the key mouse or trackpad or whatever it's called works with other things - like when I log in here.  When I bought a secondhand computer [not this one] probably about 6 years ago the shop where I bought it suggested Bullguard so I went with that as a protection system and have stayed with it.  Will see what they say.

Over the last 2 or 3 days whenever I go to log in, a message from Trustee Rapport appears warning that Res is an insecure site. It is a bit off putting.

Strangely enough on the offices' second computer, this does not happen

Now you mention it Trike, I have had some wording "site insecure" or something like that in the top bar of Safari when I log in. In red lettering too. I've gone back over the Rapport to check it is installed properly.  I've got Bullguard and the Rapport on the computer so hope they will do their jobs.

Yes, it's because the SSL certificate has expired, and now Forumotion are looking for (even more) money. I'll see what I can do. (I covered this with money only a few weeks ago). Prepare to migrate to a website which likes freebies - apparently it's not me anymore (can't afford it).

I'm confused about Forumotion's billing system - seems they have charged me twice for the same feature. Anyway, they tell me the SSL cert is now good for a month and the site should show up as secure again in browsers, but only until June 14th. I'll see can I sort out a better agreement with them in the meantime.

I've had trouble recently logging in - the site lets me in but then doesn't let me reply. Today it didn't let me in at all, and suggested getting rid of my cookies but it did also say that would mean I had to reset my passwords.
When I tried to show my husband who is more computer-savvy than I am, it came up with the same thing as the last few days, so we reset the password.  And I am back!  Though still with as little to say as usual.

Glad to see you are back, Caro.  Somebody mentioned that we haven't heard from Minette for a while and Temperance noted that Ferval had been absent as well.  People may have been on holiday of course or not feeling 100% or just very busy in real life.  I haven't noticed Hatshepsut for a while either so I hope everyone is okay.  I must admit I sometimes just lurk without posting - well I don't always have anything to say.  Sometimes I like a reading a thread but don't have anything pertinent to add.

Does this mean that the writing is on the wall for Res Historica as we know it? The General Data Protection Regulation comes in to force on the  25th of this month but I can't see how this would really affect the working of the forum. It could conceivably reduce revenue from advertising I suppose. You also mention that you're having to pay for the layer security certificate on a month by month basis. Do you need assistance with this? Crowd-funded perhaps? (I say 'crowd' but I don't even think that the regular posters even amount to a baker's dozen at the moment.) But do let us know.

Forumotion have changed their system so that one has to sign up for a "package" now if one wants to avail of certain features (like SSL). This is fine, even if it is a bit of a price hike. My beef is that they did this unannounced and I had already purchased credits from them to cover SSL for the next year, which should have kicked in automatically once the old cert expired. Instead it simply expired and now I can't avail of the credits I purchased - the system insists I sign up for a package instead (pay again, in other words, for SSL). I reckon this is grossly unfair, and probably illegal, unless they also provide a method for existing unused credits to be availed of in the new system. It was especially unfair not to signpost this billing system change beforehand - I wouldn't have wasted money on unusable credits if I'd known a few weeks ago when I sent them money to purchase same.

So I've availed of their new "package" for a minimum period (one month was the cheapest they offered) and I will use this time to see if I can get them to honour their receipt of money for services per existing contract before this new system was unilaterally and suddenly implemented. We're not the only website affected, and it seems to have been more of a giant cock-up on their part than anything evil, but if they don't sort it out and instead try to run off with my money (and a lot of other people's) then this site isn't worth retaining on their servers.

I'll keep everyone informed, of course.

I suppose anyone can make a mistake.  I know I make errors but it will be naughty of the party concerned if they try to hang on to the loot.  Maybe they will do the decent thing, let's hope so.

Having signed in again after a couple of weeks' absence, I am totally confused by all this "privacy policy" stuff. I have answered "Yes!", "Yes!", "Yes!" to everything, an anxious acquiescence and uncharacteristic submission which, disturbingly, makes me sound like that silly woman at the end of Ulysses  - or should that be the silly woman at the end of  Useless (by James Joyce), that being a perhaps fortuitous misreading of a title by a favourite British literary critic and social commentator, Battery Sergeant-Major 'Shut Up' Williams?

All these "privacy policies" - I haven't a clue as to what I've agreed to - from Res His to Brora Jumpers. Just I've just ticked the "yes" box  and hoped for the best - story of all our lives these days.

And by the way , I say the same as Meles meles to you...

Paul, I have edited my post above: it now reads "anxious acquiescence", not "wiling acquiescence". Acquiescence usually means a reluctant agreeing to something, not really a willing acceptance. Bad choice of qualifier in my original version. You have quoted me, but I can't edit your post - would you alter it for me? Doesn't really matter, but my error is bugging me. Ta.

Temperance, as I mentioned on another thread, I copied and pasted the agreement into a Word document.  I tend to do that with all online sites where I have to tick boxes to get access.

Some time ago I was looking into whether there was any other work I could do online besides typing.  I nearly applied for one of those "website testing" jobs (which I think is reporting on how "user friendly" or not a site is).  However when I read through the bumf online one of the things I would have had to agree to was to indemnify them in case anything went awry.  I didn't apply for that job. Most of these online jobs don't may that much anyway so I didn't fancy leaving myself open to a law suit if I made a mistake or if the employer just didn't like something I had done.

I know I once filled in an online form for one of the companies one can use to surf the web saying that I would prefer it if they didn't have this policy of the user having to enable cookies.  If I remember - which I don't always - I try to use "duckduckgo" for my online searches as that site promotes itself as a non-tracking site but I don't know if any site can be 100% non-tracking.

The site has SSL activated at the moment so should not generate such a warning. However some products which monitor site safety will object if the page contains links to other websites that are not secure (like when people link to pictures, videos, URL links etc that may indeed reside on suspect sites). Other products may even issue a warning based on a time delay in loading content. Some monitoring tools are better than others in other words, and some simply give misleading information.

To investigate what you found yesterday I would need to know therefore which product on your PC actually sent you the warning, and exactly what wording was used in that warning. Also, if you ever see it again I recommend you check what your own browser says about the same page you are accessing and if there are any red alert symbols or similar displayed next to the URL at the top of your screen.

No problems with the website today but I've been working on quite a large table (as in Microsoft Word table) and the columns resized automatically - I must have hit a wrong key but I couldn't resize using the undo last action command and dragging the columns to try and resize seemed to make it worse.  I wondered if the problem was anything to do with it being Word for the Mac.  I could cope with tables quite well when I was working full-time and I don't think Word has changed that much since I retired.

I pay monthly to keep the SSL cert current, as do all forumotion administrators now. This site wasn't the only one which nevertheless dropped SSL at the changeover this month (for reference it expires and renews on the 12th of every month so if you notice it's missing again on the 13th/14th/15th let me know). For even more money one can "purchase" an annual renewal scheme - but since SSL certification is actually an admin setting designed to protect access and content and not something actually bought from any authority anyway, I am loath to commit to such expenditure - in fact I'm not even too chuffed about paying at all for what is only a protocol, not a "thing", for which Forumotion now charges just to access the function required to implement it.

SSL certs, once renewed, then have to be registered again individually by global DNS servers which normally rely on cached cert information when ISP users (ie. human beings) use the internet. Some of these update their cache promptly with new cert info, others can take a few days. Forumotion should anticipate this by renewing in good time so that most DNS servers as possible will already have cached the new cert before the old one actually expires. This month they didn't apparently. I have registered my disappointment with them - as well as several others.

The Customs, traditions, etiquette and ethics board is not refreshing or bumping itself on the Res Hist Home Page.

Looking from the Home Page, then the most recent post listed on the Customs board is on the Edible Oils thread and a post by Temp dated the 2nd of May. Go into the Customs board, however, and the Edible Oils thread is listed about 5 threads down while the most recently replied to thread is the Fakers thread with a posting from Paul dated the 6th of July.

Is anyone else getting this?
