Hoards Empty

Hoards - not the rampaging tribal lot, nor food stacks but those of  hidden away items of value to someone.

From time to time hoards of stuff suggesting wealthy items of the time, come to light. I was fascinated by a hoard of axe heads sometimes found in northern France also; they were, of course, highly valued for barter in ancient times. Coins hoards are  more common and bits of jewellery -often broken - are sometimes dug up. One assumes that there must also once have been a memorable marker above their hiding place, long lost in time,

Of no great value, we once found a hoard of a little girl's schooling papers circa 1800, which hidden behind a an upright in the stairs. These we gave to a local museum In a similar place close by we found papers speeches and sermons,  related to the abolition of slavery some of strong meat, too. Perhaps the same little girl grew up in the same house and hid away some contentious material.

The reasons for burying hoards are more interesting than the content, to my mind and we can only apply some guess work around them....... Pepys family burying their stash of cheeses during the fire of London 1666 is an interesting perspective on valuation.  And there again there is  interesting reflection about why a hoard was never reclaimed.

I think Anne Frank's home which her father kept as it was when she was there could be considered a hoard. My children think of us as hoarding though we are trying to downsize, but I especially want to keep many of my books and most of my jewellery.
Tim long ago took us to the Sutton Hoo burial site which might also count as a hoard of treasures.

The Nag Hammadi library could be considered a hoard.
