I have been enjoying the Moggie thread, ID your picture above reminds me of a neighbour in Aussie who had a cat and a cockatoo, she kept the Cocky's cage out on the verandah floor where the cat had a habit of lying on the top of the cage and teasing cocky through the bars. then one day pussy fell asleep after her teasing session. Cocky saw his opportunity and took a lump out of the cat with his big beak, cat jumped 4 feet in the air screaming and never teased the Cocky again.

A catte indeed!

But who could the nasty ginger moggy shown here possibly be? (Two choices perhaps?) And who's the poor, wee timorous beastie being toyed with?

The catte on the cushion was the work of Mary Queen of Scots. The ginger beastie was Elizabeth Tudor, but I've often thought MQS had Bess of Hardwick (who was also a redhead) in mind too.

Mary presents herself as the little hunted mousie.

Should Larry resign?

His incompetence as Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office is after all well known in government circles, and this disgraceful public brawling with a female is surely the last straw.

Good grief, the police had to be called to break up a cat fight? What is wrong with throwing a bucket of water out the window? Surely less expensive.

Larry holds an official position and is therefore regarded as a civil servant.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chief_Mouser_to_the_Cabinet_Office

Throwing a bucket of water over the combatants would have been quite inappropriate.

I'd have thought brawling and howling with the neighbours in public would be quite inappropriate for a civil servant too. So in this case, a bucket of water would definitely have been called for.

Good idea ferval, in fact, all politicians should undergo a shock treatment of a cold bucket of water at least once in their careers. And some more often than others.

There is always next year! But who would bother holding the cat down whilst spray painting all those bloody bones and teeth?

Too early here for the Xmas malarky, it doesn't start here until around the 10th Dec. Very sensible.

I tried to find a really revoltingly sentimental Victorian Christmas card with a Tiny Tim type moggy; but this is the best I can come up with, I'm afraid. Don't think she's very Victorian.

It is not Unsinkable Sam, Trike. That's Simon from HMS Amethyst who was awarded that medal for courage.

There is a pic of Unsinkable Sam and some of his history on the first moggy thread here https://reshistorica.forumotion.com/t317-the-moggy-thread

The two cats are similar, but the markings are slightly different.

The life of Sir Henry Wyatt, father of the great poet, Thomas Wyatt, is supposed to have been saved by a cat.

Wyatt was imprisoned and tortured - then left to starve - on the orders of the well-known villain, Richard III. But the evil of that dastardly tyrant was - at least according to Wyatt family legend - foiled by a moggy's devotion:

"He was imprisoned often; once in a cold narrow tower, where he had neither a bed to lie on, nor cloaths sufficient to warm him, nor meat for his mouth; he starved there had not God, who sent a Crow to feed his prophet; sent this his country's master, a Cat, both to feed him and to warm him ---- it was his own relation from whom I had it ---- A cat came one day down into the dungeon unto him, and, as it were, offered herself unto him, he was glad of her, laid her in his bosome to warm him, and making much of her, won her love. After this she would come every day unto him in diverse times, and when she could get him one, bring him a pigeon; he complained to the keeper of his cold and short fare; the answer was, he durst not better it; but said Sir Henry, 'If I can provide any, will you promise to dress it for me?'. 'I may well enough' said the Keeper, 'are you safe for that matter' and for him from time to time such pigeons as his Acater (caterer) the cat, provided for him. Sir Henry in his prosperity would ever make much of a cat, and perhaps you will never find a picture of him anywhere, but with a cat beside him."

The cat which had providentially saved Sir Henry from starvation was indeed (apparently) included in a later portrait, an image of which, alas, I cannot find.
