A styalised reindeer tattoo found on a Siberian mummy. Not necessarily into tattoos but the design and art work is superb.

The article also says that the woman was dressed in Chinese silk, would have loved to see a picture of the fabric also.

A further detailed article on this burial, on the examination findings of the woman, the grave goods and her amazingly well preserved clothing, a bag of make-up, jewelly etc.

A fascinating exhibition of mummy portraits and ancient papyri (including fragments from the Gospel of Mary) to go on display at Manchester University. These portraits, in particular, are spectacular

And speaking of portraits of the dead, this painted tomb has been unearthed this year at Corinth

I read some time ago about the assertion that some cave paintings were attempts to portray motion and this little video seems to support the idea.

Not long ago I was reading an article on pre-historic cave paintings and how the gaits of the animals were depicted correctly, something that didn't happen in animal art (especially equine) until relatively recently. Unfortunately I can't seem to find it now, but compare the gait on this horse

With these

I have always been amazed at the perspective and movement of the cave paintings, compared with those done before say the 16c.

On the theory that some cave paintings were an attempt to portray motion, these 31,000yr old depictions of lions from the Chauvet Cave, France are also suggestive of motion.

There's a cracking exhibition on at the BM. How I wish sometimes that it was just a bit closer. http://www.guardian.co.uk/artanddesign/gallery/2013/jan/24/ice-age-art-british-museum-in-pictures?intcmp=239#/?picture=402959793&index=13

At 40,000 years old, this ivory carving known as Lion Man is the world's oldest figurative sculpture found to date.

If you can access BBC iplayer then this is really worth watching otherwise keep your eyes open in case it turns up on youtube. Andrew Graham-Dixon in a Culture Show Special - Ice Age Art. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01qrmpz

Great stuff, the BEEB can still pull it off in producing accessible but authoritative programmes for general viewing.
