| Thank you all for the kind welcome. I have an interest in various periods of history, but I do have a passion for the early to middle Anglo-Saxon era. |

| I'm assuming from the "Anglo-" suffix you mean within an English context, and the period does indeed throw up quite a lot of debatable topics.
For me however the "Saxon" era began some centuries before and is equally as fascinating. In fact, if one is to believe every historical claim regarding Saxon hegemony and extent of habitation then they are easily, after the Romans and "Celts" before them, the single most influential culture in a European context, and the longest surviving of the great cultural identities that subsumed huge swathes of the continent before subsequent invasions from outside led to the diversity we still understand as "natural" today. One can travel from North-West England all the way to the shores of the Black Sea and never leave an area which at some point and to varying degrees counts Saxons as an important part of its cultural heritage. |

I do indeed mean just that, Nordmann. However, I am interested in the rest of the Germanic world at this time, particularly during and just after the Adventus Saxonum. |

| Hi susieroe ... seeing your name I immediately thought, ah that name's a bit like Arsinôe, so they're probably interested in ancient Egypt. Then, quite a bit later, it dawned on me that you might actually be named Susie Roe. I'm not always this slow on the uptake (though sometimes I'm even slower and thicker, and a bit crusty to boot ... rather like last week's custard).
But, despite that rather senior moment ... hello.

| Hello everybody, thanks for the welcome. Melee melee, neither is quite correct; I watch any new documentary on ancient Egypt but it isn't my 'thing. I love British history, particularly of England. And I'm a family historian, so chose one of my old family names. Don't get me on 'slow on the uptake', it can take me days, even years, to realise that an assumption I've made is nearer to the opposite of what was said, or happened! |

| Oh hello Susiroe - hope you don't find us too terrible. I signed up a little under three years ago (when "The White Queen" was on TV) and I googled something like "Am I the only one who doesn't like P Gregory's books?" and I found this forum. You will realise of course that we do much more here than talk about historical novels that may not be our "cuppa". You may be sounded out as to whether you are a Ricardian or not - or an "on the fencian" like myself. |

Nah, nobody cares about Richard III anymore. They should never have dug him - sorry, her - up. - susieroe wrote:

I know that feeling. Welcome to Res Hiss, susieroe. |

| I missed this thread, sorry susierow, welcome. Take a deep breath and dive into the fray. I notice no one has invited you to join them in the tumbleweed suite for a drink so let me do so now. I will try to find the decent port, I suspect we could all do with one. |

How about an indecent port ... I always found Portsmouth was particularly rude and sleazy, but always in an accommodating and exciting sort of way: ruff rather than rough........ OK I'll go get my coat. |
