I may have seen that piccature previously, Trike, but Dr. Who was not shown at our national one-channel tv back then, later on I don't know?
For several years I didn't value time spent in front of a screen as valuable, so many an icon refers to something/-one unknown to me.

Dr Who is now approaching it's 50th anniversary, Nielsen and still has a large following here in the UK, new episodes are still being made. "One Million Years BC" was made by Hammer Films, more famous for their Dracula (Christopher Lee) films, another 60s icon.

Nielsen - lock yourself in the toilet, rock frantically from side to side and wave a screwdriver in the air while you're at it. Then you too can be Doctor Who as he yet again foils a fiendish Dalek plot to destroy the earth in his Tardis.

Least that's what we used to do.

But this is all the corny stuff. Let's have some decent 60s music!

All a bit noisy for me now, but back then Clapton could do no wrong.

And this must be one of the most famous love songs of all time. "Layla" was released in 1971, so it's a couple of years too late for the 60s, I suppose, but the 60s didn't actually end until 1973!

Here's the girl it was written about, Pattie Boyd. She was the one (and Marianne Faithfull) we all wanted to look like. But by the end of the 60s Faithfull's life had turned to tragedy - Jagger and heroin were a pretty lethal combination.

This song haunts me still - the Simon and Garfunkel version was released in 1966. But I remember it from a film I saw around 1969 - the terrifying "Witchfinder General." It was used for the soundtrack.

PS Deleted "Astral Weeks" as it wouldn't play.

Ah now Temp, on that one we are I think, in accord.

It haunts me too ... and I still find myself singing it from time to time.

We performed it once during a school concert (I say "we" but it was the choir that performed it, I was in the orchestra pit), but nevertheless I agree, it does have a rather haunting personality.

.... But I've never discovered whether it was really traditional or not.

EDIT : And by the way I loved your quote from Wordsworth (I knew I knew it - but I admit I had to look it up to find the author), though such sentiments are not exclusive to the 1960's ... indeed Wordsworth was writing in the 1800's, wasn't he? But then I guess good poetry is probably fairly timeless, no?

Oh - I deleted it, MM, for fear of being an Eng. Lit. bore The Sixties 650269930. But I shall put it back at once. Here it is:

"Bliss was it in that dawn to be alive,
But to be young was very heaven..."

But you're right, being young was what made it all so special... I never thought I'd find "Wheels of Fire" or "Disraeli Gears" a bit tedious, but I must admit that those old Cream tracks (haven't heard them for ages) are now far too manic for me. Music's got to be sad and subtle these days! Alas, we are not what we were. Oh no, I think I can feel a Tennyson quotation coming on. Will shut up at once. The Sixties 650269930

PS Info on poppies was really interesting - thank you.

1968 was memorable for the formation of two great bands, and unlike much of other 60s music, are still listened to by the youth of today. Unfortunately couldn't find earlier footage for the first one, but 1970 is close enough.

1966 - Cliff Richard "becomes a Christian" and the Anglican church in the West immediately goes into terminal decline. He succeeds where Nero failed.

Do not let this dreadful man near your house plants (but give 'em all the Black Sabbath and Baby Bio they can take):

Temp, Scarborough Fair was definitely on "The Graduate" soundtrack."Witchfinder General" has very similar piece;

Unlike the Hammer films, WFG did not use any supernatural elements in the story, but was based on real events.

It was not just the women who needed liberating. The Wolfenden Report came out in September, 1957. Ten years later...

1967 Sexual Offences Act in England and Wales decriminalises homosexual acts between two men over 21 years and in private.

"For most people the Sixties was a time of sexual awakening and experimentation. But it wasn't until 1967 that gay and bisexual men could share that freedom. On the 40th anniversary of the decriminalisation of homosexuality, we revisit the appallingly repressive atmosphere of the Fifties and Sixties that ruined lives, destroyed reputations and finally sparked a campaign for change."

Pictures of two famous Hollywood girls - one from 1970, the other from 1962. What a difference eight years can make - although Hanoi Jane was not quite as strong and liberated as she would have had us all believe. But then, were any of us women during the 60s and 70s? Things didn't change overnight, for women or for gay men.
