| It should be remembered that from the moment Hitler came to power in January 1933, the German people began to be brainwashed by a highly efficient propaganda machine. Nearly all the young soldiers who participated in the invasion of Poland in September 1939, would have belonged to the Hitler Youth Movement, most had become fervent Nazis, considering themselves to part of a Aryan master race. By 1939 many German generals and officers had become dedicated Nazis. The Nazis made it clear early on, that their aim was to conquer Eastern European countries, and exterminate the Slavic population, and colonise their territory [Lebensraum]. A taste of far worse to come, started on September 1 1939, when Germany invaded Poland, regularly as they advanced the Wehrmacht soldiers were murdering Poles in small towns and villages, Wehrmacht officers worked in strict co-operation with the SS Einsatzgruppen [death squads], Jews were amongst their prime victims. The invasion of the Soviet Union, was for Hitler a war of annihilation, the Nazis viewed the people of the Soviet Union as non-Aryan sub-humans [Unter Menschen]. Before the invasion and during the operation, German soldiers [Wehrmacht] were bombarded with anti-Bolshevik and anti-Semitic propaganda, very often German officers would describe the Soviets as “Jewish Bolshevik" sub-humans. This constant brain-washing, much of it from an early age, meant that that most soldiers viewed this as a racial war. The Wehrmacht, had little regard for the Soviet civilian population. Hitler's directive for the attack on the Soviet Union, called on the German troops to react to any type of resistance, even if it was passive, with shootings. German army forces burned entire villages, and shot the population of rural districts in retaliation for partisan attacks. The Wehrmacht leaders made it clear that crimes carried out by German soldiers were not to be punished, if they claimed ideological considerations as their motive, this encouraged mass brutality. The murder of Jews was common knowledge throughout the Wehrmacht, their soldiers worked in coordination with the SS and its Einsatzgruppen [death squads] . In Western Russia for instance, the Wehrmacht assisted the Einsatzgruppen in the massacre of 1,000 Jews, German soldiers guarded the execution site, and alongside the SS, shot Jews. |

| German army - Heer. Wehrmacht included all 3 armed services. plus the Waffen-SS and (later) Volkssturm |

| The Waffen SS, was under the TACTICAL CONTROL of the German army, but not part of the army, it always was and remained a branch of the SS. |
