Abroad during her reign and coping  with equally volatile  circumstances, I actually know little of her. A mass of great wrath about her policies often surfaces here. Of the reasons for those I have gleaned some idea but were there any benefits?

This was  withdrawn from my list of topics that would fail becaise there surely must have been some benefits. But no one seems interested, able to discuss - or big enough. I know she was very unpopular.

Benefits from the Iron Lady directly I find hard to think of.  Sometimes it was the method of implementing ideas that was worse than the actual idea.  The basic idea behind the Poll Tax that everyone should contribute to society as everybody gets something out of it was not so bad but it was ordering that someone living in a bedsit should pay the same as somebody in a house or that someone in a small terraced house should pay the same as someone living in a mansion was flawed - and it was if I remember rightly it was the Poll Tax that led to Baroness T's departure as PM.  If the tax had been introduced in a more graduated method - that people contributed according to their means it might have been less despised.  Not everybody can have loathed her though or the party she led would not have been returned as the political party with most MPs in the House of Commons on three occasions.  When I lived/worked in London I sometimes listened to LBC radio (don't know if any of the people I listened to would still be working there after all this time) and there was somebody called Stuart who rang in sometimes who was a great Maggie T fan.

Margaret Thatcher: The Benefits Empty

I have reservations regarding how much political and economic theory behind the many (often conflicting) policies instituted during her prime ministry actually originated within Margaret Hilda's grey matter. She was often the willing manipulee of some very dubiously motivated "advisors" who could exploit her loyalty to them - something she decided was a "good thing" but which we must now question rigorously knowing that little bit more as we do now about the same people. And it is all too easy with such a divisive figure to fall into the trap of a "love her/hate her" dichotomous and mutually exclusive evaluation of her, or her policies. Her legacy, or at least her various governments' combined legacy, has been in the main one of continued loss of faith in government as a dependable organ when it comes to safeguarding people's health, wealth and happiness. She and her colleagues may not have initiated that decline but they certainly accelerated it - as would probably have any regime in her place at that time and in that country.

I would suggest maybe the title of the thread could be slightly altered to "Margaret Thatcher: The Benefits Thief" - at least it would provide a rather more fecund point of origin in analysing her policies, and indeed her legacy.

(Altogether now) "Ding, dong ..."

It also depends on who one was/is ... some people benefitted immensly, often financially, from her governments' policies, although whether untimately their souls obtained similar benefit is not so certain.

Have just asked my cleaning lady....... every member of her blood line (7 siblings and all their families) but not her own raised family are on Benefits - and she knowing some inside tracks is bitter on that subject. She and hers all work - and do very well iand rising  in the ranks of responsibility.  her husband worked the land and cannot read. She said they were able to buy their council house because of Mrs T. but did not explain.

SO? She has another job (with managerial title as it happens) And I worked my butt off abroad to make enough to pay someone to do what I can't do now. She also keeps me very well informed of what is going on in the town - especially at low life level - and is counted as a friend so what's the grin about, MMMM? Am I missing an intellectual point here? Is it an attempted class swipe? Just unclear humour.

Mark you, the late Ken Dodd could amuse. I like the one about the man who invented road cat's eyes because he saw  the glow when his cat faced him. Had the cat faced the other way he might have invented the pencil sharpener.

No offence meant - just mistook it for your famous humour. My apologies, and pass on my regards to my fellow low life through your intermediary.

Hope you find a new butt soon.  Cheers

Re- butt; I hope not. I stopped smoking when I retired from said excesses. My lady does not speak to the local lowlife. Famed humour? You mean framed? Yer, figures - often happens.
