I have a distinct memory of reading the statement that Gustavus  "wished to remain neutral vis a vis Spain" (while being at war with the *Austrian* Habsburgs) and that this annoyed his paymaster, Cardinal Richelieu.

I had always thought that this line appeared in CV Wedgewood's The Thirty Years War but despite extensive rummaging through my copy have been unable to find it.  Has anyone else come across it? If so could you please let me know where?
