The great British tragedy Empty
PostSubject: The great British tragedy    The great British tragedy EmptySun 04 Aug 2019, 21:53

I’m a big fan off the history of the British car industry.

Specifically 1967 to 1982.

Why? Well it’s a tragic, almost comedic tale of woe, where if it could go wrong it did. I’ve read loads of stuff in regards to British Leyland but still cannot make my mind up who (or what) killed it.

Was it the Allegro?

Was it the unions?

Was it government?

Was it the management?

Was it all 4 factors?

What do people think?

VF,

I coincidentally came during my life in contact with a lot of British cars, first the Hillman-Commer van, then the Bedford van and during my army service as driver a Bedford lorry and in the fish auction immediatly after WWII they had army Leylands to distribute the ice in the several storehouses (pakhuis) for the fish treatement
But that is here not the subject...
I think I found a comment for you in the form of an essay
https://www.aronline.co.uk/opinion/essay-the-great-leyland-tragedy/

Tomorrow more comments, but in the meantime, while I did the research
https://motor-car.net/commer/item/17580-commer-express
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commer
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bedford_Vehicles
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leyland_Motors

And as I was in the agricultural sector machinery production, very related to the car manufacturing industry and visited in Belgium car factories as Volvo, Ford GM I recognized some of the problems described in the Leyland essay...

Kind regards from Paul.
