I find it very difficult to understand why WW2 in Europe is often described as a fight against Fascism, the reality is that the only Fascist nation was Italy, which only played a small part in that war, the major adversary was National Socialism, the driving force behind the persecution of the Jews, and the resulting Holocaust. This post illustrates some of the differences between Fascism and National Socialism. Benito Mussolini, the leader of the Fascist movement took control of the Italian government in 1922. Anti-Semitism at this time, was not a part of the Fascist party doctrine, and for many following years Mussolini and the Jews enjoyed a civil relationship. However from 1936 onwards, Mussolini, edged towards a closer relationship with Nazi Germany, this resulted in 1938 in the implementation of racial anti-Jewish legislation. Mussolini had become very dependent on Hitler, both economically and militarily, but there was one very important measure Mussolini never agreed to, that was the deportation of his countries Jews to the Nazi extermination camps. The Italians also asserted the independence, by helping Jews outside Italy, in Italian occupied territories, for instance the small area of Southern France, occupied by the Italians in 1940, became a “safe area” for French Jews fleeing from Vichy and Nazi anti-Jewish measures. In 1942 after Germany began deporting Jews to the East, the Italian military began a rescue operation throughout the territories it administered. The Italian authorities saved some 40,000 non-Italian Jews. In September 1943 Italy ended its participation in the war, soon after the Germans occupied the parts of Italy, not liberated by the allies, this signalled the beginning of the Holocaust for Italian Jews. In total around 15% of Italy's Jews died in Nazi death camps, however the great majority of Italy's Jewish population survived with the help of Italian civilians and the military. |

| As a rule of thumb, I for one never read posts in full bold font because they are blurred - and kind of shouty. Now we are also getting the drift of what you post about...... and engaging in your sole preoccupation does not engender our own more diverse reflections on divers matters historical.
There are posters here with in-depth knowledge of much history - with huge minds filled with extraordinary detail of facts and figures - real fact wizards in many areas are they - and I am in awe of them.
If you are using the site to air your opinions so-be-it, I guess, but do not expect much participation from other posters who have opened their minds to discovering myriad truths in a spread of historical diversity.
And I cannot comment on your last 2 posts because I cannot read bold format -but a glance tells me you write statements but without reference detailed backup - which. as your adopted name suggests, you are good at but as yet have to actually produce. |
