Who were the Night Witches, that created fear in the dead of night, they were the all-women pilots of the Soviet Union's 588th Night Bomber Aviation Regiment. The Night witches became the first women military pilots to directly engage in enemy combat, the 588th pilots weren't the only women in regiment, the navigators ground crew, and support staff, were all women.
The Night Witches were organised by the famous Soviet aviator Major Marina Raskova. Initially when Germany invaded the Soviet Union in 1941, Soviet women were not allowed in the Air Force, even though they were allowed on the front lines in the army. Flying had been very popular in in the 1930's, and thousands of Soviet women belonged to flying clubs, so there were an enormous number of protests from many of them concerning the prohibition, after all they said if women were allowed to fight alongside men on the ground, why not in the air too. Stalin was one of Raskova's admirers, she showed him the protest letters, and convinced him to allow combat pilots in the Soviet Air Force.
After training the women pilots were assigned in the following order, the most qualified to the 586th Fighter Aviation Regiment, the second most qualified to the 587th Bomber Aviation Regiment, and the least qualified to the 588th Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, yet by a twist of fate the “least qualified” became the most feared and famous. At this time there were not enough modern planes in the Soviet Air Force to meet requirements, so the 588th were given out-of-date Polikarpov Po-2 biplanes that were primarily used as training planes, the pilot sat up front, and the navigator, who was also the bombardier sat in the rear. Some Night Witches likened the ancient Po-2 to a coffin with wings, it was very flimsy, being made of plywood with canvas stretched over it, if a bullet struck the plane, it could easily burst into flames. The Po-2's top speed was just over 90 MPH, with a cruising speed of 68 MPH, it could carry only two bombs, one under each wing, the weight of the bombs togather with the crew, only allowed the plane to fly at a low altitude, which allowed them to be spotted easily by the enemy. Because of these handicaps, the planes could only fly at night under the cover of darkness.
The Night Witches had no parachutes, since they flew so close to the ground, they were also without modern instruments and had to rely on maps, compasses, stopwatches, pencils and torches. Their cockpits were open, so the pilot and navigator were exposed to the elements, such as rain and freezing wind, however the Po-2 did have some advantages, it was light-weight which made it more manoeuvrable than the German planes, and harder to shoot down, the top speed of the Po-2 was slower than the stall speed of a German fighter making it hard to engage them from the air, and being made of wood and canvas, they did not show on German radar.
These biplanes could take off and land almost anywhere, this was of great advantage, since they needed to operate very close to enemy lines. Because of their combat schedule, the women slept and trained during the day, as they flew at night , they didn't get much sleep, but neither did the Germans, who had to be prepared for these night raids, the psychological effect of the Night Witches raids took a toll on German troops.
These planes could only carry two bombs, this required regular return to base to refuel and take on two more bombs, each sortie lasted between 30-50 minutes. These female pilots were named the “Night Witches” [Nachthexen} by the Germans, it was meant as a derogatory term, but the women of the 588th adopted it with pride.
32 Night Witches including Marina Raskova died in service, 22 Night Witches won the Hero of the Soviet Union award, at the end of the war the Soviets held a massive victory parade, but the Night Witches did not participate, their planes flew too slow. Despite being the most highly decorated unit in the Soviet air force during WW2, the Night Witches Regiment was disbanded six months after the war ended.

In addition to the 588th, Major Raskova was also instrumental in founding the 586th (Fighter) Regiment and the 587th ( Bomber) Regiment, both of which were also all female.

Lydia Litvyak, the most successful woman fighter pilot of WW2, flew with the 586th for part of her career.

The person she shot down on that day was 11-kill German ace Staff Sergeant Erwin Maier who parachuted out of his plane. After his capture by the Soviet troops, he asked to be taken to the ace which shot him down.
At first, Maier thought that the Soviet soldiers were making fun on him when he was taken in front of Litvyak, only after she described in immense detail how she took him down did he realise he was shot down by a woman.

The Western Democracies made much greater use of their female populations for war work and in the armed forces than Nazi Germany, who relied on imported forced labour to make up the shortfall in manpower, the Soviet Union went way beyond any other country in using females in combat roles.
In addition to the aviation units mentioned above, the SU employed women as radio operators in tanks, as gunners and as snipers.

Sniper Lyudmila Pavlichenko, killed 309 Germans;

The use of women in combat roles was anathema to the Nazis, who thought women should be at home with their families.

German treatment of Soviet POWs was brutal anyway, and especially so in the treatment of captured female combatants:

Yes indeed. As I see it Nazi Germany certainly missed a huge opportunity there. While Germany refused to include women into the draft - believing they would better serve the fatherland at home raising babies and doing soft support - Soviet Russia (and Britain too, but notably not the US) pushed ahead and introduced the conscription of all young women - and not just into any voluntary or patriotic service, but compulsory conscription into whatever job the government said you must go whether that be the military forces, civil defence, communications, industrial and agricultural work, or whatever. To both Russia and Britain this brought very many millions of extra personnel into the fight and ultimately it might actually have been a decisive matter.

Interesting indeed, MM. There are arguments on both sides, of course. Did the Wrens of Western Approaches do more to win the war than an equal number of riflewomen could? Almost certainly. Was Rozelle Raynes releasing a male seaman to do a vital job? (see her book "Maid Matelot") Probably. How about the Idle Women, Lumberjills etc. Would they  have been more valuable on the front line? Less sure about that.

British women served in the uniformed services, but only in support duties, not in combat roles, a very worthy contribution, but not decisive.
As for Soviet women, 800,000 served on the frontline, this only amounting to 5% of the total Soviet military personnel, some served in the infantry, many were snipers, others medics and nurses, although  more involved than British women, they were far from a significant factor.

In uniformed service perhaps, but in terms of overall war work the IWM gives a figure, for 1944, of 7 million British women involved in industry etc. Which is a very significant factor.

I would add that women manning anti-aircraft guns, searchlights etc, freed up men for combat roles. Which is important because by 1944 the British Army was beginning to experience manpower shortages, especially infantrymen, 20% of the Army, 70% of the casualties.

Andrew J Higgins, proprietor of Higgins Industries of New Orleans was a believer in equal opportunities and employed his staff regardless of race or gender. Quite a step for Louisiana in the 1940s:
