One wonders if it's a coincidence or if there is any significance in the fact that those parts of Syria and Iraq which are part of the Islamic State are geographically almost identical to the 12th century crusader County of Edessa (Comitatus Edessanus). That area in turn had also formed the basis of the Roman province of Mesopotamia a thousand years before that.
